Corda Candle FOUNT OF MERCY *Limited Edition* Divine Mercy | Hyssop + Wood
These redemptive scents of hyssop and wood are inspired by Divine Mercy. The feast of Divine Mercy, instituted by Pope St. John Paul II, is celebrated on the second Sunday of Easter, concluding the Octave of Easter. The candle's name "Fount of Mercy" is taken from the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, given by Our Lord to St. Maria Faustina.
Behind the Inspiration
Hyssop appears in the Old Testament multiple times and is often used for cleansing. In Psalm 51, the famous lament and cry for mercy, David begs God "Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow." The first time hyssop appears in the Bible is at the Passover, foreshadowing Christ's redemptive love on the Cross, as hyssop was used to spread the blood of the lamb upon the wooden doorposts.
And in the New Testament, in John's gospel, hyssop is present at the Crucifixion. When Jesus upon the wooden Cross cries out "I thirst," hyssop is used to give the Paschal Lamb sour wine. It is at this moment, right before he gives up his spirit to the Father, that Jesus cries out for us. And it was there at the Cross that Jesus's heart was pierced, from which blood and water gushed forth as a fount of mercy for us.
"There is no misery that could be a match for my mercy, neither will misery exhaust it, because as it is being granted, it increases. The soul that trusts in my mercy is most fortunate, because I myself take care of it" (Diary of St. Faustina, 1273).
