Roman born, his pontificate is famous for the spreading of the Gospel to England and to the Tueton Races, to whom he sent the missionaries St. Augustine of Canterbury and St. Boniface. He fostered Benedictine life everywhere and restored several abbeys including Monte Cassino. An old tradition makes him a Benedictine monk. He wrote the life of St. Benedict. St. Gregory the Great is a Doctor of the Church. In art he is shown with the Holy Spirit, in the form of a dove, on his shoulder, dictating his writings. He is patron of musicians, singers, students, teachers and of the West Indies. His feast is September 3.
